Salvia Divinorum — Diviner's Sage Ethnobotanical Collection

The Science of Salvia divinorum

Salvia divinorum, commonly known as Diviner’s Sage, is a perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is endemic to the highlands of Oaxaca, Mexico . The Mazatec Indians have used the fresh leaves in divinatory rituals, healing ceremonies, and for medicinal purposes for centuries . It is also known by names such as ska María pastora, hojas de la pastora, and Magic Mint .

Active Principle

The chemical identification of the psychoactive principle, a neoclerodane diterpene called salvinorin A, was completed in the early 1980s . Its chemical formula is C₂₃H₂₈O₈ with a molecular weight of 432.47 g/mol . Unlike classical hallucinogens such as LSD or psilocybin, salvinorin A is not an alkaloid and contains no nitrogen atom . It is a highly selective full agonist at the κ-opioid receptor (KOR), a unique mechanism distinct from the serotonin receptor activity of classical psychedelics .

Dried and crushed leaves, or leaves fortified with extracts (such as our 10x extract), typically range from dark green to brownish or blackish green due to concentrated pigments .
